Jack and Joe's Story

Jack & Joe
Age 5
Sanford Children's Hospital
Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome

Jack and Joe are two peas in a pod. As twins, they have many common characteristics, but one of the most prominent is courage.

Before they were born, Jack and Joe were diagnosed with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Joe had decreased blood volume and delayed growth, while Jack suffered from overloaded blood and symptoms of heart failure. Even after surgery, the brothers battled for their lives.

At just 11 days old, Jack developed a serious blood infection, went into renal failure and nearly lost his battle. Joe was diagnosed with mild right hemiplegia and required physical therapy until he was 3 years old.

Now in elementary school, the boys have made significant progress. Joe is a hard worker who doesn’t give up easily despite his mild motor difficulties. In fact, he loves to play baseball and basketball. Jack is friendly and loves helping others. He loves to learn and has received an award at his school for his great efforts.
